Dan Magarrell completed his double major of Physics/Computer Science, while playing fulltime in our band (an amazing feat) and currently lives on the east coast working as a laser scientist (or at least that's what he was doing the last time I heard anything, which was a few years ago) Not only was he a great multi-instrumentalist, but he wrote some great and enduring songs (Good Legs & Arc Welded come immediately to mind) that we still do today...dorr

The pic in the elevator reminds me of a clip from the Monkees. {Bob, with the right winter cap you could pull off Mike Nesmith for Halloween.} I loved the rawness of the black and whites from Porky's, a really cool effect. Blue Tattoo always says you screw with her........

Well, I'm sorry to shatter your illusion Denise, but in my old age, I seem to tend to ramble when I start talking, so to stay focused and factually correct, I've got to write out most of the breaks for Backtracks and Down On The Corner, (except for the live shows, obviously) but it's kind of a compliment if it SEEMS like all that talking is extemporaneous! Well, The Register is a quality newspaper that has been fantastic to our band over the years. I'm sure the confusion stems from The Twisted Parrot doing a FOUR DAY St. Patrick's Celebration that started yesterday (Fri.) and runs thru Monday. All I know is that I stopped by The Parrot on Thursday, watched 'em put up the tent, talked with Dustin the owner/manager, and made plans for tonight. The Blue Band will be there tonight (Sat.) and I'm hoping everyone who sees this message will phone a few folks and let them know what's up. See yas there, bring cornbeef and cabbage and green CAKE!...bd

Thanks Pete for the correction. I had seen Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister on the country channel on the show where 7 pop/r&b singers are working on country songs just before i posted, I think that is where that spelling came from. Out of curiousity, is the Hub in Cedar Falls a bar or restaurant, or a combination of both? I was curious if I needed to eat before I got there, or if I could get something there. Dear Roger, The name of the place the Blue Band will be playing at on Sat. March 15th is The Twisted Parrot, not The Twisted Sister, altho some sisters may be twisting or get twisted when dancing to the Blue Band. Dear Bob, All is well in the world, except I still have some laundry to do. I tried to send you a message via the KUNI web-site, but I was unable to send it. I thought my brother had gotten rid of my favorite places on the web,( one of which is this page,)but, happily, I misunderstood him. My favorite places remain mine, and they will not disappear on me every three months because somebody has to be paid ao I can use them! I've never been to the Twisted Parrot, and I wouldn't go there if the Blue Band wasn't playing, so thanks for broadening my horizons! The more places you can find for the band to play in Des Moines, the better it will be for all concerned! This note is posted in response to today's Blue Note from Bob Dorr entitled, "Didja Miss Me?" Did I miss you? Is my face blue? I have seen the Blue Band every year (except 2007)since 1988. That's 19 consecutive years! Man oh man! I have seen and danced to some great shows. Keeping my eye on the doughnut instead of the whole, still I have often wondered what it would be like to attend some of the countless shows that I have missed. For example, I have never been able to attend a New Year's Eve gig. I missed the Really Big Pig Gig. So while I loved the road to Biggsville (a great place to meet a lady), I also know that I have caught only glimpses of a band I enjoy so very much. In addition, I am so thankful that I saw the band play in Huxley, Iowa. That will always be my favorite night (and they have all been great)! The band could not have been any finer with Bob and Jeff at their best! (Remember the goatee, Bob?) And you've just gotten better since! You guys (and former band member, Molly) really are the best! I lost the battle with winter years ago. That's why I moved south. Congrats on getting through another winter. Be safe! Enjoy your cake! Your missed and loved.

USA- Monday, February 25, 2008 at 05:24 AM CST

well, no, mostly it has to do with another odd quirk of my personallity in that I do not take "the refund". I let the state hang on to any over payment (I think it's called a "carryover") and our ever dilligent state revenuers apparently get so few of these "carryovers" that they do not see that money sitting there, making them think that I haven't paid at all. This happens with gross regularity. My accountant always wins this arguement (she's done my taxes for nearly 30 years) so I'm not too worried. BTW, I don't get the Register on a daily basis. Did they ever print my letter to the editor regarding that "voter's day" story?...bd

I enjoyed the show greatly in Fairfield. This was the first time I have heard a trumpet player with the band, very cool. It was an awesome peformance as usual. I drove back today. We left at 8:00 am just after it started to snow and arrived home at 11:45. I averaged probably 35 mph until I hit the Des Moines city limits, it was actually more slippery in Des Moines. It looked like they might have had more rain from the ice on the trees. I did one 360 with no traffic close on a flat part after Oskaloosa, I was going even slower at the time and no ditches on either side, so I just rode it out and then took off again.Take care.

to all you Blue Band men ( and gals too) thankyou sooooo much for believing the "show must go on" even when it meant risking the skating rink road trip from hell on the way home. I felt so bad hearing of how scary it was, I'm a total woos about winter driving. bd, what's up with an inch of water in your basement, what a drag! Cheryl and Jeff, I loved seeing you two walk thru the front door... how cool was that?! hope you made it home safely today..be careful out there everyone

Nothing beats sitting on the skating rink formerly known as I-380, for 70 minutes, at 3am, surrounded by cars in the ditch and semis jack-knifed, with the only thing stopping your vehicle being the rumble strips on the side of the road, especially when you're only 19 miles from home, unless it's finally getting home and finding your basement bedroom under an inch of water! Heed the schoolmarm's advice for today or you will feel the total helplessness and terror that Mother Nature continues to foist on us this winter. Next challenge: make it to the radio station for Sunday Night Music. I hope I'll be talking to you! Now where's that wet vac when I really need it?!...bd

As for the Lemke's post...CONGRATULATIONS (on all fronts). Dear Bob and the Blue Boyz, You guys ROCK. My wife Sara and I have been True Blue for about 18 years. We have seen the band at Ogara's, Brubakers, Bunkers, Famous Dave's and Riverside and Co. in Czech Village. Last Saturday night at Dave's we celebrated 17 years of marriage and 15 years sobriety with the BLUE BAND. There is no better way to do it. The planets were in perfect alinement that weekend. We reintroduced ourselves to Bob. We talked about Lonny Knight. I bought the 25 year Dvd. Awesome. I have a 5 year old and a 3 year old who now say play the BLUE BAND Daddy. No foolin. I just celebrated my 46th b-day and I am entertaining the idea of The BLUE BAND for my 50th. This is a long way off but the way the band has evolved I feel you'll be around a long long time. Its BLUE BAND DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!! Love you guys, BLUE SKIES, Paul and Sara Lemke

The Mahoney's confusion probably comes from the fact {if it was the original line up on Sun}. Steve, Bobby T. and DJ would be playing with Daddio's Funky Posse. So not the BB but kind of familiar. It was brought to my attention that The Blue Band was mentioned in an investigative story published in the Des Moines Register Sunday Feb. 3. Hopefully they will print my letter to the editor regarding this matter. If they don't, here it is: Dear Register and Register readers, Living outside of the Capitol City, I often find myself out of the loop of important Register stories, such as the one written by Jennifer Jacobs for your Sunday Feb. 3 edition. It was brought to my attention that The Blue Band was named in the story, so I was hoping to set the record straight regarding the band's appearance on Nollen Plaza, August 5, 2005. First, we were paid $650, not $715 as was stated in the story. That fee included $250 for us to provide the needed sound equipment for all the speakers that addressed the crowd as well as our performance. The remaining $400 was our appearance fee. That figure covered travel expenses for band members from Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Des Moines and Kansas City. $400 is approximately one quarter of our normal appearance fee. We agreed to this reduced fee because the event was a nonpartisan celebration of the primary pillar of our nation's democracy-the right of all individuals to vote. The event celebrated the 40th anniversary of the voting rights act of 1965 and the 80th anniversary of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote. The event also offered the opportunity for non-registered people to register on the spot. At the time, Governor Culver was our Secretary of State. It was part of his job to advocate voter registration. One of the innovative ways he and his staff did so was by organizing this nonpartisan celebration of this fundamental right and responsibility of every citizen in our democracy. Chet Culver should be applauded for this inclusionary event. The Blue Band is proud of it's participation in a day that celebrated voting, no matter who you vote for. There was nothing unscrupulous or sinister about that gathering on Aug. 5, 2005 and I thank Chet Culver for inviting us to participate. I would like to encourage all Register readers to be inspired by this event and to exercise your opportunity and obligation to vote for the candidate of your choice. And thanks again to Governor Culver for his efforts to include as many Iowans as possible in the voting process. Yours Bluely, Bob Dorr & The Blue Band

On the Eve of Tubby & The Gophers battle with The Hawkeyes, The Blue Band brings a slam dunk party." Sounds like a pretty good party, eh? Located six blocks from where I grew up...I highly recommend an evening in Uptown with a stop at Cheapo Records on Lake Street and some urban people-watching where ever you look. Dear Friends, The Des Moines Register has a slogan, "Miss A Day, Miss A Lot", that could be most properly applied to the Blue Band Page. Life holds many happy and sad moments, some on the very same day! For example, one of my uncles, Bill Musselman,87, died on Jan. 9th, and his furneral was on the 12th, so naturally, I forgot to give greetings to Bob. When I tried to find KUNI on the radio, I couldn't. Then this afternoon, I check the web-site, and not only do I find out that Agie's father died Monday, but also Jeff's mother died this morning!- With the weather being as cold as predicted, this is indeed an acceptable time to do other than travel on our Iowa roads.... My dear friends, my thoughts and prayers are espiecially with all four of you...

The combination of the passing of two Blue family parents this week and the prediction of 30 below zero windchills tomorrow night has forced the postponement of tomorrow's roadhouse gig outside of Dubuque. Please be careful if you're out in the elements this weekend and enjoy the company of your family and friends...dorr

My prayers go out to The Chief and his wife on such a pivotal loss to their family. I hope to meet Angie one day as all I've been able to do is date drummers, I can't even imagine actually marrying one...but considering how well he's put up with 'goofy singer from Peoria' I think she got an exceptional one to go through life with there. Hey that Tom has a good idea...I did the blonde math and it seems like a few of us Blueband freaks could fund what it would take to get a copy of the "SCORCHIN" sounds that were NYE...come on Bob...play along.....

I was saddened to read that there are, presently, no plans to release the recent New Years Eve concert/extravaganza on cd. I was really hoping that was in tne works, cause it looked great on paper and I hear it was even better. I entirely understand about the financial logistics, so how much would we all have to ante up to make it happen? Seriously. How many of us reading these notes would love to have a copy of that nights music. I know I would. Most of us are not in the position to finance the project, but all of us together sure could. What do you folks think?

I remember driving to Connie's for a 28th birthday celebration only to find the flyers on the window of the club door with the message CANCELED written with black marker across the front. From then on I ALWAYS make certain bad weather hadn't canceled the gig. But at least the scary motel across the street gave us the only space heater in the joint. Brrrrr. Interesting trivia {or maybe not..} In the movie "To Catch A Thief" there are scenes of Grace racing around in a little sportscar, scaring the heck out of Cary Grant on the steep hairpin turns of Monte Carlo. Only to find out from the AMC Guy those were shot on the same roads she died on 27 years later.

New Years Eve was recorded, but for no other purpose than having a personal audio snapshot for myself. I think other audio artists, big and small, are having the same problem we are in selling enough units of each release to justify the production costs of releasing it. (mixing, editing, sequencing, artwork, graphic arts, printing, mastering, packaging, shrink wrap, shipping, blah, blah, blah) Roger, YOU are the exception! You search for anything and everything we've ever put out. If we had about a thousand more of you, I'd consider putting out portions of the night (I thought The Blue Band was SCORCHIN'!) As it is, we're still many thousands of dollars away from paying for the 25th anniversary DVD/CD package and that's almost TWO years old! Enough of this ranting. Happy Blue Year! See yas at my annual 28th birthday party, Fri. night 5:30-9:00p at The Reverb right here in Sparkle City. BRING CAKE!...bd

Congrats to all Blue Band Alums, past and present, Bob, I agree with Blue Tattoo, you do a great job organizing the New Year's Eve bashes, and the band should stay together if for no other reason than this: If the BB wasn't around, my New Years Eves would be too dull. Thanks to Ginger and Mark for helping me with my 2 great plates of food, and the two wonderful pieces of cake, etc. I feel chatty tonight because I just got off the phone with my sister and my Mom and Dad in Texas, and Mom is still in the hospital, but she feels a lot better! Maybe she will be released in a few days, but even if she isn't, she does feel a lot better than she did! Thanks for any prayers or good vibes you've sent! Now, back to New Year's Eve-I always have a great time, but this year I was having such a good time that, for once, my long johns weren't too hot, and I discovered I could have a great time even if I didn't show the Blue Band T Shirt I had on! Denise, if you think I'm cute, it takes one to know one, sweetheart... One woman accused me of following her around-I said, "No, I'm not following you around, but if you want me to, that can be arranged..." Once again, a great show, even better than last year, and, as the song says, "Any ordinary band would've given it up by now!" Thank God you're not just an ordinary band ! P. S.-Also, please notice my new e-mail if you haven't already! Not only am I using the mouse pad, I'm also busy making this computer do what I want it to do for me!

Hooray for IOWA! What a great night! The process DOES work when people show up and participate. I've been a caucusing (Denise, did you see Letterman last night talking about the "caucus"? Funny.) DFLer since before I could walk (yes, that was a LONG time ago) and it IS exciting. My favorite subcaucus name (she was the only one) in the last cycle was "Undecided-US out of my uterus subcaucus". Yes, ya gotta love the DFL. Glad to read of the young people turning out to make a difference...because they CAN. There's hope...by golly, there's hope. Congratulations to Iowans for showing the rest of us how to do it correctly by inviting us in to watch them host the process. Well done.

Our caucus site in Urbandale was packed. There were 303 participants, 110 of which were new registrations. Obama won 4 of the 9 delegates, Clinton 2, Edwards 2, Richardson 1. I brought my 13 year old foster son with me, and I think he found the whole process very interesting, especially when the viable groups tried to recruit the non-viable groups.

That was really exciting! And it was very encouraging to see how many young people (I think officially it is the 17-29 age group) showed up at the caucus. Many of them looked VERY young- of course, the older I get, the younger EVERYBODY looks- and it was very cool to see several of them volunteer to serve on committees, etc. The only part I objected to was the name of one of the committees- THE COMMITTEE ON COMMITTEES... sorry if you're one of these delegates, but do you think you could get the name changed to something that sounds less like government bureaucracy?

While I can empathize with the ideal of limited government, it has in the past proved to be dangerous for women, children and others without physical power. It IS indeed a fine ideal; I just want the same opportunities, rights and protections that strong people have. Glad you're okay with the Dems, because I think this is their (our) year! I will follow my tradition and submit a resolution for an Equal Rights Amendment at my caucus tonight. Peace & Love

Since I'm ok with virtually ANY of the Democrats, I've decided to caucus for Ron Paul (the Libertarian in Republican clothes). Congressman/Doctor Paul is as close to the BIG time as we Libertarians have ever gotten! I can't abandon my principles now! If you want someone to appoint judges that will support LIMITED government in your lives, Ron Paul is the guy! Have fun Democrats, it should be a very interesting night...dorr

Iowa City USA- Thursday, January 03, 2008 at 02:11 PM CST

For any of you tempted to elect another Republican to the White House, I'll repeat the same two cautionary words I've been sayin' for years: Supreme Court. I also believe the Repubs are dancing frighteningly close to turning the USA into a theocracy and that religion belongs in the home and church, not in government. I watch the news and see from time to time mobs of people in other countries fomenting violence for various reasons, and I notice that they're generally all men. While I believe the men in my life are wonderful people, I think the men in charge of things have totally screwed things up and that it's time for a woman to take charge. That's why I am caucusing for Hillary Rodham Clinton. My father, who has become more and more right-wing Republican as the years have passed, predicts that the first woman president will be a Republican. Let's prove him wrong by going to the Democratic caucus (the true party of equality for women, not the party which cynically trots out women spokespersons when it's politically expedient) and start Hillary down the road to making history!
LouiseDallas
Women's Country- Thursday, January 03, 2008 at 01:25 PM CST

Caucus decision time. Actually, I like almost all the Democrats. Were I to go to their caucus, my three preferences, in order, would be Joe Biden, John Edwards, Barack Obama. I'm just not comfortable with another 4 years of a Republican. (especially the politically expedient Mr. Romney, or Mr. Giuliani, who is not even favored by his own kids. What does THAT say?) As you know, I'm a Libertarian. So is Ron Paul, who's dressed up in the Republican cloth. What a dilemma! What'r' YOU gonna do? (which reminds me of the old joke: How many Producers does it take to make a decision? Answer: I don't know, what do you think?) Iowans-it's our only chance to have ANY influence on national politics. Go out and participate whomever you choose!...bd

At a past job, my supervisor Jim would visit his dad in the nursing home. Lately the home has been handing out cheese sticks for afternoon snacks. JIm made the mistake of opening one for a resident in front of several other residents- now he's mobbed by the residents as soon as he walks in the door- "Please open my string cheese!!!" What a cruel thing to do to a population that has a lot of problems with arthritis and hand tremors- give them packages of food they can't open.
