Whoa, three gigs in a row where a $50 bill turned up in the tip jar! Too bad we don't have another gig for a couple of weeks! Thank you, generous Blue People! bd

USA- Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 04:15 AM CDT

So it was Mark Twain that said "everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"! Well, The Twisted Parrot is DOING something about it! I love playing outside, even if it's in a tent, but I really dislike the combination of wet and cold. The weather for Saturday is predicted to be rainy with a high (if we're lucky) in the low 40s. So I was not disappointed when The Parrot decided to move this week's St. Paddy's weekend celebration inside. Warm/dry always trumps wet/cold in my book! So see ya at the Twisted Parrot, 6500 Hickman Rd in the Des Moines suburb of Windsor Heights, Saturday night, same (geezer gig) hours: 7-11pm. Wear green, drink green beer, go green, pee green, pea green, spend some green (the whole world is going green) (remember, green ain't nothin' but a little yellow and a whole lotta BLUE!) Bring shamrock CAKE!...bd

Yesterday I stopped in a new (to me) record store (yes, actual vinyl) on Euclid Ave. in Des Moines called Red Rooster Records. They had a copy of the first Blue Band album; Is My Face Blue? for $8. As I remember, we sold those things for $5 when it came out in 1982! bd

Thanks for the good wishes everyone. I decided this morning where to have the surgery done with the preopp examination to be on March 16. I will have the surgery done as quickly as possible after that, I virtually have lost the vision in my right eye very quickly, on the 20/20 scale my right eye is 250 right now with no vision in it at all. My insurance is not the best so this is going to be very expensive out of pocket.

Tuesday I had cataract surgery on my right eye and the left one will be done March 9. The difference is amazing already --- I now realize I need inside painting to be done :) I don't know the cost but insurance will cover a significant part of it. I'm hoping to be able to drive at night now. Good luck to you Roger!

A year ago when having my annual eye exam I discovered I had a catarac in my right eye and one starting in my left. My vision in my right is no longer clear because of the advancement in just one year and the left is all I can see with with any clarity. Needless to say the surgery on the right needs to be done fairly quickly withn the left to follow about two weeks later. I'm trying to get as much info as possible about the cost, but I need to get this taken care of as quickly regardless. It sounds like it will cost an arm and a leg though, I talked with my insurance company yesterday and unfortunately they won't be paying nearly as much as I hoped. I let you know when the surgery is scheduled.

Breaking News about Sat gig. You can purchase just the concert tickets for $26.50. It starts at 8:oo in the City Auditorium. Ditto on the photo. I have been remiss in telling the band members and others about 2 gems on Ames' Main Street. Cafe Diem (open til 10:30 Sat) and Chocolaterie Stam (til 8:00)are both great coffee places. They are across the street from each other and about 7 blocks from City Auditorium. If you need chocolate for a special Valentine Choc Stam is so worth visiting to see the beautiful displays and decor. The Octagon itself is also close on corner of 5th Street and Douglas. CP and Sheryl could peek in before 5. Happy Birthday Sue! Have a great day,

Dear Bob, I'm off work today because of the weather here in Des Moines,(Tuesday looks iffy, too,) and guess what? I was just interviewed over the phone by Mr. Tyler Harris, a sophomore journalism student at the U. of I. A couple of years ago, Pat Hazell put my name down on his web-site as a "long-time fan," and Mr. Harris wanted to know what I thought of Pat Hazell. While singing Pat's praises, I also reminded Mr. Harris that you, Jeff, Steve, et. al., were all worth listening to. I told Mr. Harris, "If you want to hear some good R & B, don't forget the Blue Band!" It's all for a paper Mr. Harris is writing. He said he'd e-mail me a cpy when he's done writing it. I wonder how he got my phone number? I hope it's not on Google-

For some odd reason, I seem to have been eliminated from the IPR loop, so this info is second hand, I hope it's accurate. Greg had diabetes for some time, and in the past year or so had developed foot ulcers. In the past months the infection began to spread, and eventually reached his heart. He had been hospitalized at Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls, but had been home recently under the care of a home health aide, and over the weekend had been taken to Iowa City, where he passed away last night in the hospital. I am very saddened and more than a little irritated that I found not, not by someone at IPR giving me the news, but by a call from the Waterloo Courier wanting a comment...bd

USA- Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 02:58 PM CDT

altho' Greg worked early mornings and I worked late nights and we consequently had little contact, in recent years when he worked later mornings, I got to know him very well. As the early producer of the IPR talk shows, he gave me the opportunity to host some of those talk shows, for which I will always be grateful. He was a fabulous talk show host because he was interested in everything and had a manner that made it easy to talk to. This is a very big loss for IPR and the (formerly known as) KUNI staff. All of us will miss him. dorr

well things change A LOT in 11 months (don't they?!) and I'm still hoping that IPR will see the audience building potential in doing live shows, but after 35 of the last 37 Xmas Eve's on the radio, I think it might be time to give that show a rest. bd

well I am having A DAY. Just got back from the oral surgeon doing a "modified root amputation" to find water dripping from an ice dam (damn) in the house that I'm advertising OPEN HOUSE this weekend, then found out that IPR management is "apprehensive" about giving me a key to the building (a key that I've had for the last 30 years) so that I can do LIVE Backtracks shows, meaning I have to put a show together and record it with all the voicings for THIS SATURDAY, while these 4 stitches are in my mouth! Oh well, at least I get to spend Saturday night with MY WIFE! If you want requests on this week's show, you'll need to post 'em here or email: hotfudge@cfu.net, but get 'em to me soon...bd

USA- Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at 11:13 PM CDT

well, no, Backtracks is only heard one time, Sat. 7-10pm, (this week-Jan. 23-A LIVE SHOW!) With the new "streamed audio licensing rules" in place, there would be an extra fee that is due for any podcast music shows. IPR cannot currently afford that fee, so there are no podcasts of ANY music shows on the IPR website. As for writing a book, if it takes me HOURS to write the little weekly Blue Note, I can't imagine how long it would take me write a book, let alone find a publisher, so at the moment, the Blue Note is going to have to be the sum total of my writings. bd

Bob Years ago at Pete n Tillies in CR I cornered you to try to figure out a song that had haunted me for years from Beaker Street on KAAY. You could not tell me the artist, but you recalled the song and told me it was a cover of Tom Paxton's "Cindy's Crying" You guys were giving out one of those flimsy discs and I wrote it down, but next day the only thing I could read from my writing was Paxton. I asked all the people over the years who recalled Beaker Street (including former radio guys) and they all told me with conviction the song I was thinking of was "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafffferrety or what ever. I KNEW it was not that. Along come the Internet. And a few years after that BEAKER STREET on the INTERNET. So I send our old buddy Clyde Clifford my clues and he says, yes, they played that song a lot but it was a cover by regional band Deep River Reunion. Oh, all the searches that followed. Then ... YOUTUBE. (I might add I was too cheap to pay $40 for a Tom Paxton CD just for that song especially I after I bought one that I thought was close enuff for rock n roll, but I mixed up Cindy with some other chick name) and I found a version of some folkies singing the song but still not the HOLY GRAIL of tunes I was looking for. Last week I found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syu1EhiXkxU So So happy. And might not have known where to look without your help those many years ago. I was dwellilng on sending you this earlier today and when I got off work "Too Many Cold Nights" was on KUNI. Karma? Kismet? Are they the same? Last night was great fun. Lucky me. I didn't have to drive either thanks to Craig and Diane. It was terrific to see Camper again as well as other blue friends. It's going to take a little while to remember that CD, formally known as CP, is really Carolyn because CD are also my initials to my siblings and others. I am glad to share the monogram because Carolyn and Bob radiate such happiness especially when dancing.

Whatta night! You guys truly outdid yourselves this time -- the best ever of many "bests." The band deserves a huge cheer for a LOT of extra work done well -- not only the collaborative work with so many great musicians who sat in, but also for the really special wedding music. Heath's version of "At Last" was, well, the last word on that old favorite. And then...Jeff put the frosting on the (wedding) CAKE. You guys had BETTER keep "I Knew the Bride..." on the playlist -- it's too good to put it away! (I KNOW Al played til he literally couldn't blow another note 'cause he could barely talk when I spoke to him!) You guys are the best. I forgot to mention, since I haven't seen anyone else post it. Did you all know that Dec 31, New Year's Eve and all night, that it's a "Blue" Moon? The first full moon of the month was on Dec 2 and now the second full moon -- that makes it a "Blue" moon from what I was taught growing up. How about "Oh, Carol" by Neil Sadaka. That was my favorite after I met my Carole! I've been waiting to write this note for weeks, since I saw the Weekly Blue Note about the wedding plans for the new Mr & Mrs Bob Dorr (we are the OLD Mr & Mrs Bob Dorr -- for more than 39 years now) and we have our reservations for the hotel and party tickets!! Soon as I saw that note, we knew we had to try to attend the wedding (along with a big party thrown in). I've been watching the weather forcasts for Kansas and Iowa and as of right now it's optimum for driving, especially this time of the year. (Better this next week than last week -- wouldn't have made the trip this last week with the weather you all have been having there.) Only minor difference between the two Carols -- one has an "e" on the end and the other has a "yn" on the end!! Now I can say "my Carol(e)" and Bob's Carol(yn)". (My brother Tom in Michigan, his wife's name is also Carol.) Carole and I are really looking forward to the trip and especially meeting all the Blue People we've been reading on this Post page for years. Since we are making this trip and won't have an oven in the hotel, can someone bring EXTRA CAKE??!!!! (Like that, Bob?!)

I've been jotting down what-I-think are the titles to some wedding theme related songs; here's what came to mind: Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are", The Beatles "All You Need Is Love", The Turtles "Happy Together", Elvis "Hawaiian Wedding Song" & "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You", Bee Gees "Wedding Day", Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters", & U2 "All I Want Is You".

To the west of that property, there was a wooded area that ran from 12th St. south to the top up the hill. About half way up the hill, there was a REAL log cabin that did serve as our club house. Dear Bob & Carolyn, When you make a decision, you really go all-out, don't you? I say just play what you want to hear-I love my job at the Y, but I hate the song, I've heard it too often-And Bob, you don't need any bourbon, or Crown Royal, or whatever-You've done so well for 10 years-Don't blow it now-Don't you want to stay sober and remember all the fun you'll have? Of course, I'm probably the last person to give you both advice, but there it is! Your wedding will certainly be at a unique time and place, and thus even more unforgettable for all guests!

Hey Pinkstuff- Just attribute The CR Gazettes lack of interest to the fact that the town (CR) has also taken too long to move into what is good for a community to know, to do, to see, to save and to join, and the media and the economic advantages are not just for a very few upper crust Cedar Rapids families! I know this 1st hand as Ive lived the a good 35 years in CR before I left for the final time in 1993. CR struggles to survive and always will as long as the town has the underlying motto, Move, if you dont like it here. Lizzie B.

I have tried to post this information on the Gazette Comments page, after a reader had some questions about how my retiring from UNI could save money for UNI if I then became a "consultant" (his word, not mine) and produced some shows for Iowa Public Radio. My post would go up on the Gazette comment board for about 5 minutes and then disappear, so here ya go: There are many ways that UNI will save money by my accepting the early retirement offer. Here are just a few: First, I have offered to produce fewer shows than I am currently making for less money than I am currently being paid to produce those shows. Next, the current benefits package that I am being paid, costs far more than the health care benefits that I will be receiving through the retirement package. Most importantly, UNI will not be paying me a dime. Iowa Public Radio is slowly migrating to a stand alone entity. IPR's listeners would be paying me to produce Backtracks and the new blues show Blue Avenue through their financial pledges and donations (BTW, the shows I currently produce generate more pledge and underwriting income than I am currently paid!) I'm hoping that fans of my shows like simpli_fi (that's the "signature" name of the fellow who posed the question on the Gazette site) will make that pledge when IPR begins our fall on-air fundraiser on Oct. 17 (Backtracks airs at 7pm that I night, I'll be waiting for your call!) Thru listener generosity, I hope to be producing programs for IPR listeners for many years to come! bd

Gazette article - p 15A 2009 10 04////// Bob Dorr is Retiring. Diane Heldt, the Gazette -- CEDAR FALLS--Public radio legend Bob Dorr is officially retiring Dec. 31 Even so, Dorr, 57, hopes to keep producing two of his shows part time for KUNI; news that is sure to please listeners of his "Backtracks" music show. "I produce all the shows in my garage," he said. "I have the original 1972 KUNI control board [there]." Dorr has hosted a rock show on public radio for 37 years. He began at KUNI as an undergrad. "Very, very few things about my degree that I got in 1974 apply to broadcasting in 2009," he said, laughing. Dorr took an early retirement package offered as part of the University of Northern Iowa's budget cuts, but his ties to KUNI remain strong. He and Iowa Public Radio officials want him to produce a few shows,he said. "Both of us really want it to happen, so I have every confidence it will happen," he said. The plan i to have Dorr work as an independent producer to keep "Backtracks" and his new show, "Blue Avenue" on the air on weekends. He keeps it old school, producing shows in his garage using his massive collection of vinyl and CD albums. He likes the imperfections an dissonance of vinyl. No digital music for Dorr, who also plays with The Blue Band. "I'm the only one I allow in my garage, except when the band is rehearsing out there", he said.///////// typos are mine.

As a life long Central Iowan I too am saddened by Dick Young's passing. I grew up listening to him on my transistor. KIOA is still the #1 button on all my radios but now it's FM. I think that Sandy Shores had the most cool DJ name.

I agree, both events on the Fairgrounds were great experiences!

What great fun at the Iowa State Fairgrounds yesterday! First an unexpected arts and crafts sale in the Varied Industries Building to attend while the band was setting up and then a rockin' wedding reception in the Ag Building. The fairgrounds certainly is different when the Fair isn't up and running but the two events I attended yesterday were enjoyable for a fall afternoon and evening. Thanks, Blue Band!
